Dogs Lovers

The woman who rescued and raised the dog as her own has moved and inspired countless people, gaining their respect and admiration.

Valerie Reid is a remarkable woman who transformed her home into a hospice to ensure that no elderly dogs would have to face the end of their lives alone. She is the owner of Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary, a pet rescue organization operating in Missouri and dedicated to improving the lives of senior dogs that have been abandoned or lost their owners.

Whispering Willows is a hospice sanctuary for dogs in their final days. Here, dogs are not fostered or adopted, and they never have to spend time in kennels. Instead, they move in with Reid and her family, where they can live out their final days in a home environment. As Reid explains to Daily Paws, “They just get to be here and get to be home.”

At Whispering Willows, senior dogs come to us for a variety of reasons. Some have been abandoned, while others have lost their pet parents. Some dogs have been removed from their owners by court order, and some owners have gone into nursing homes. Regardless of the reason, we welcome all these furry friends into our home.

However, the zest for life in senior dogs is not diminished. “What I find endearing about senior dogs is their forgiving nature,” Reid explains. “Regardless of the hardships they may have faced, from trauma and abuse to neglect or the loss of their owner leaving them feeling hopeless, they still choose to forgive and love unconditionally.”

Reid’s inspiration for starting a sanctuary arose from her experience with her own father, who passed away from cancer. He left behind his faithful companion, a 9-year-old Doberman pinscher who had been by his side throughout his battle with the disease. Reid had been caring for her father and was unable to take in his beloved pet.

Thankfully, she later found a foster family who was able to provide a loving home to the dog for an additional year and a half—which inspired Reid to help provide the same experience for other pets and families.
